INTRODUCTION:
Frost damage to agricultural crops of all kinds continues to cost growers millions of dollars each year.

Frosts are cold weather conditions of relatively short duration during which organic material may be damaged by exposure to surrounding air temperatures lower than 0°C.

HEAT TRANSFER:
The earth absorbs heat from the sun during the day and releases it into a colder atmosphere at night. The heat loss is greatest just before dawn and this is usually when the maximum danger of frosts and frost damage occurs.

This release of heat creates an “inversion layer” of warmer air which can be found from 10-50 metres above the ground.

WIND MACHINES:
Wind machines have become the central element in most frost protection strategies. They use the warmer “inversion layer" air to protect a crop from frost damage. The wind machine fan is angled slightly to pull this inversion layer down to ground level to protect the crop from frost damage.

Fan 4-Bladed (This is rigid mounted – no teeter pin)
They use an extruded 4-bladed alloy fan of 5.4 metre diameter. This is the “New Generation” high efficiency fan which moves more air and operates with less noise and zero vibration than any other fan available. This fan has 25% more performance than the standard 2-bladed fan. They have spent a large sum of money on research and development for this fan and have applied leading edge technology in its development. Richard Karn, a member of the NZ America’s Cup design team and holder of a Masters Degree in Aerodynamic Engineering was also instrumental in its development.

There is a growing public awareness and negative attitude toward noise pollution and traditionally most of the noise from a wind machine is created by the fan. With the “New Generation” fan the wind machines are widely accepted in populated areas where conventional machines are not due to noise.
